Astrosysteme Austria’s (ASA’s) research-grade telescopes, which incorporate encoders from Renishaw, are designed to enable keen amateurs to observe and photograph remote solar systems at an affordable price.

ASA consistently renders all components of the optics, mount and tracking systems to precise professional requirements; for instance, its Astrograph systems, on fixed mounts with direct motion, use a similar tracking capability to professional observatories. 

This has been made possible by using high-resolution Tonic incremental encoders installed directly on the axes of the mount.

The tiny Tonic encoders — which offer fine resolution to 1nm and jitter to 0.51nm RMS — employ spatial filter optics and electronics that enable angular positioning to high accuracies, according to Renishaw.

  • The reduced jitter and increased resolution result in an encoder that provides the ASA torque motors (direct drives with no backlash) with enhanced positional stability and low-speed velocity control. 
  • As the Tonic encoder reads RESM rotary-scale rings, which are directly mounted onto the moving axes, backlash and the effects of encoder couplings and bearing wander are eliminated.
