Markem-Imaje has introduced a large-format thermal transfer printer, which is intended to help users reduce their packaging and coding costs.

Switchable between intermittent or continuous modes, the new coder can over-print flow wraps, sachets, bags, labels and other flexible packaging substrates.

Generic packs can be over-printed as and when required, reducing inventory costs and increasing uptime, according to the company.

The 128 x 75mm print area (128 x 150mm in continuous mode) means that, along with the usual date and batch codes, additional variable information can be added, such as: extended product details (country of origin and so on) for fresh produce, spices and pulses; ingredients listings and nutritional information for processed foods; private label logos and barcodes for confectionery, health foods and baking supplies; and diagrams and detailed instructions for hardware fixings and fittings.

Rather than using two printers to mark the top and bottom or both sides of a pack, a single Smartdate 5/128 coder can also generate multiple prints in the same cycle.

Typical applications include the multi-lane packing of sachets and stick packs and cross-web label over-printing.
