Tristar Plastics has supplied Ultracomp UC500 for a large processor of sugar cane to solve lubrication issues on the production line.

During the harvest season, this particular facility produces approximately 7,000 tons of raw cane each day, crushing it to pulp as the juices are drawn.

The crushing process utilises large hydro-mechanical roll presses and a non-scheduled shut down, for any reason, can cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars each day.

The presses run at bearing pressures in excess of 2,000psi, speeds between 8-10sfpm and have always required continuous lubrication.

Another issue is the molasses-like residue that develops around the bearing journal area, causing further problems should the seals fail.

Tristar recommended Ultracomp UC500 for this application, allowing the customer to eliminate the ongoing lubrication issues without concern over the loads and speeds of the machinery.

UC500 is comprised of a combination of fibres within the binding resin and graphite migratory lubrication.

Tristar improved the seal design at both ends of the journal, essentially eliminating the ingress of sugar onto the bearing surface.

Ultracomp is self-lubricating, easy to machine, has resistance to vibration and impact, as well as an ultimate compressive strength of up to 54,000psi.

Ultracomp bearing grade composites meet the needs of high load, low speed, and plane bearing applications.

UC200 bearing grade polyester/graphite composite is designed for high load, high impact, slow speed and vibratory applications.

UC200 has abrasion resistance, does not require lubrication and has extremely low moisture absorption.

It runs best on shafts with RC30 or higher.

The UC300 bearing grade polyester/PTFE composite is similar in construction to UC200, PTFE lubricant added to resin matrix for rotary or linear applications to reduce its coefficient of friction.

It runs well against stainless and aluminum.

The UC400 bearing grade polyester/MOS2 composite is similar in construction to UC200 with moly lubricant for slow rotary, salt water and dry oscillatory applications.

The UC500 bearing grade blended fibre/graphite composite is an interwoven laminate using PTFE, polyester fibres and graphite lubricant.

It is a suitable material for full rotary applications where self-lubricated low friction and long wear is required.
