A modular braking system from Twiflex has been chosen to ensure safety and reliability on a new SAG mill at a copper and gold mine in British Columbia, Canada, which is scheduled to commence production in 2013.

Mount Milligan Mine is anticipated to produce 81 million pounds of copper and 194,000 ounces of gold annually, and essential to the production of these resources will be a 22MW SAG mill.

Metso Minerals, which was commissioned to supply the primary crusher, two ball mills and a SAG mill, along with other associated plant equipment, turned to Twiflex to provide spring-applied VMS-DP brakes and an electro-hydraulic power pack.

The Twiflex VMS-DP floating brake has an adjustable clamping force from 735kN to 920kN and can be used on installations with a disc diameter of at least 4.5m and a thickness of between 117mm and 130mm.

Key benefits of product application

  • The VMS-DP hydraulically released safety brakes can operate in arduous conditions
  • The brakes offer a compact, modular, mine-ready design that, unlike calliper brakes, does not need guarding
  • In static operation, the VMS-DP brakes will be used to hold the mill during liner replacement and general mill maintenance
  • For dynamic operation, the system will be able to operate in two modes: stopping the mill from full speed in an emergency or carrying out inching/creeping operations in the event of bearing lubrication problems or power failure
