More manufacturing businesses are making staff redundant and turning to outsourcing in an attempt to cut costs and survive the economic downturn.

Computer support company Ulysses IT has noticed a significant jump in enquiries from businesses over the last three months.

The news coincides with significant IT job losses around the world.

‘Businesses are discovering that they don’t really need a full-time IT person when there are plenty of competent support companies out there,’ said director, Paula Backen.

Ulysses IT, based in Leicester, specialises as an outsourced IT department for its clients.

Its staff deals with manufacturing businesses across the UK.

Backen added: ‘Typically clients find they spend less on IT overall yet have better control of it.

‘This is because a full-time IT person will create work to keep themselves busy.

‘Bosses with no technological knowledge will not realise that things are being done that are not really necessary.

‘A good outsourced IT department will not do these things to try and save clients as much money as possible.’ Ulysses IT was established in 1998 and offers outsourced IT on a pay-as-you-go basis.
