Control Techniques has revealed how its Unidrive modular drives have been used as part of a test rig for advanced 1.6MW hydrostatic power transmission systems for wind turbines from Artemis Intelligent Power.

Artemis required a test rig to allow it to test its prototype digital displacement transmission to see how it would behave in a wind turbine.

Control Techniques recommended the use of a 1.6MW prime mover — an inverter-driven induction motor — and two 800kW generators, again inverter-driven motors — 22 SPMD modules in total.

The 1.6MW test rig has confirmed that the design offers high efficiency at all speeds, and super-fast response at all load levels.

Key benefits of application

  • Peter McCurry, research and development engineer at Artemis, said he was impressed by the price of Control Techniques’ offering and the technical input of the company.
  • He added that the company was easy to work with and could be flexible, allowing Artemis to tailor a system to fit its requirements and budget.
  • The versatile Unidrive SPM’s modular power circuits minimise space requirements.
  • Unidrive SPM is configurable into open- and closed-loop modes, paralleled and load sharing, with active input and regeneration, in multi-pulse configuration or fitted on a common bus for circulation of energy between drives.
  • Range of modules give additional functionality, communications or connectivity with feedback devices.
