The Department of Physics at the University of Warwick has invested in a Trumpf Huettinger TIG 40/300 induction heating generator.

In combination with an oscillator system, the generator will be used to melt various metals and alloys that could be superconductors or magnetic materials; the purpose of this project is to investigate their physical properties.

The custom-made, water-cooled coil is impedance matched to a copper cold boat, onto which the materials are placed for melting.

The system is used for forming binary or ternary alloys of various materials, starting from the constituent elements.

It is also suitable for casting rods of the material from small ingots or buttons previously cast using the same system.

An infrared pyrometer will be used to check the melting temperature of the new alloys and compounds that are synthesised using this system.

Currently, researchers are operating the system at a frequency of 136kHz and at approximately 20kW power from the TIG 40/300 generator.

Trumpf Huettinger power supplies are designed to be robust and reliable to maximise the short throughput times and production yields achievable with this method of heating.
