Parker Hannifin has introduced the HKW series, a range of brushless synchronous electro-spindle motors, for use in machining centres and in milling, turning and grinding applications.

Featuring a water-cooled and frameless design, the motors have been developed for high-speed machining at up to 50,000rev/min, are rated to 230kW and can provide both high torque at slow speeds and high maximum speeds at constant power.

Delivered as separate components, the HKW range of synchronous electro-spindle motors can easily be integrated into the mechanical structure of existing or new machines.

According to Parker Hannifin, the motors provide a flexible technology platform with the performance and functionality required to meet the demands of high-speed machining applications.

In terms of construction, the HKW motors consist of a stator, with or without a housing; a rotor, with or without a hub; an optional large-diameter resolver; and a compatible drive unit.

The use of cold permanent-magnet technology means that the bearings are subject to less heating than conventional induction motors and also that there is no dilation effect, contributing to a long service life.

The HKW motors are said to be smaller and more compact, with a greater power density, than competing induction motors.

The company claims that, when used as spindle drives, HKW motors offer a number of advantages over conventional asynchronous motors.

One advantage is extremely low levels of vibration, giving the potential for higher-quality surface finishing, while reduced axial shaft expansion delivers greater accuracy and increased bearing life.

The HKW series also allows faster spindle acceleration and deceleration, producing shorter machine cycles, and can be operated in constant torque mode up to base speed, and at constant power in field-weakening mode, at up to 20 times the base speed, eliminating the need to oversize motors for each application.

HKW motors are compatible with Parker’s range of drives and with many common third-party units.

The company also provides global customer support, training and service facilities.
