WERMA and Total Protection — two Northamptonshire businesses focused on providing safety equipment to plant operators worldwide — have helped a specialist in silicon-based technology to protect its workforce and operators at a silicon plant in South Wales.

The company had suffered a recent incident at one of its sites that forced it to look at its procedures for entering and monitoring analyser houses where oxygen depletion is a possibility.

Existing procedures were carried out using a portable O2 monitor on an individual basis. However, portable monitors only alert the user of low oxygen, while inside the analyser houses. Further challenges include the fact that not all operatives were carrying personal monitors; ideally the site needs to be monitored in three zones individually and at two security offices; and due to the scattered nature of the analyser houses, a hard-wired solution was not feasible.

The site is classified as Zone 1, so Atex-approved equipment would have to be used.

The solution

  • WERMA’s new compact range of EX-approved LED beacons in the 729/728 series provide extremely bright, long-lasting LED beacons as permanent or flashing lights to signal if it is safe to enter and work inside the analyser houses.
  • Total Protection was able to provide a solution with the following key features:
    • External display, remote sensor
    • Wireless transmission of data
    • Pre-wired/configured for self install
    • Powered via 110V supply preferred
    • Some sensors to monitor for H2 as well as O2
    • Delivered within 12-week time frame
    • Atex-approved traffic light system for access/entry signalisation
  • The Total Protection system was able to meet the criteria prescribed by the applications with the use of wireless technology being one of the most significant factors in enabling the complete system to be installed quickly without costly infrastructure work.

WERMA is the leading manufacturer of a wide range of Beacons and Sounders and accessories, often referred to as stack lights, signal towers and Andon systems. Products are designed and made at the HQ in Germany and the full range is available from its UK operation based in Wellingborough.

The range consists of signal towers and beacons available with both LEDs and filament bulbs together with a comprehensive range of sounders; sirens, buzzers and horns in a wide range of sound output levels.

Principal function is to provide optical and audible warning of machine fault or machine shop danger where such beacons and sounders are commonly installed.

Andon lights, as beacons are now commonly referred to, are often used as “call for action” systems to improve efficiency of for example line side supply of components. Manually operated lights alert remote departments wirelessly to resolve calls for action.

Many innovative features such as USB connectivity and wireless monitoring systems are also available.

There is also a comprehensive range of ex-proof signal products compliant with the latest ATEX directives.

The full range of products can be found on www.werma.co.uk where an Eshop facility is available for all major credit cards.

All WERMA products are manufactured to strictly controlled quality standards (DIN EN ISO 9001:2000).
