Lubrication system designer and manufacturer William Coulthard has purchased an advanced air-gauging system from Bowers Metrology, to improve accuracy in measuring pump plungers and associated bores.

Alan HuggonIn, quality engineer at William Coulthard, said: ‘In addition to measuring the standard internal and external diameters of these very precise parts, we also wanted to analyse features such as barrelling and taper.

‘Having examined the alternative technologies available, we decided to buy a Bowers PC 2200 electronic/air column, together with an internal air-gauging probe to enable precise pump bore measurement and also an air-gauging ring, to accommodate its plungers.

‘Now in use, the Bowers system has fulfilled our needs; the ring and probe are easy to use, and the PC 2200 column is simple to set-up and has a clear graphical display.

‘The valuable information provided by the Bowers system has allowed us to perform process analysis and further improve our manufacturing techniques.’ Bowers advanced PC 2200 contains a multitude of measuring functions including static and dynamic gauging, classification grading, probe mixing and (A+B), (A-B) gauging.

The robust column has many useful features including optional metric/imperial modes, a three-colour LED display and a digital display with status indicator.

The unit’s dynamic mode is capable of determining Max, Min and TIR, whilst approach limit settings and Tolerance limit settings are also featured.

If required, the PC 2200 can be linked to PLCs or Logic controllers, whilst an RS-232 output enables the unit to be linked to data loggers, computers or printers.

According to Bowers, their advanced air-gauging system is a fast, user-friendly method of providing high-precision results in even the most challenging of shop-floor environments.

Using air-flow volumes and pressures to precisely measure parts, Bowers air gauging is an extremely reliable and repeatable technology that is suited to applications containing demanding dimensional tolerances.

Bowers air-gauging systems are enable the measurement of not only standard dimensions, but also geometric and relational characteristics such as squareness, parallelism, ovality, taper and the straightness of bores.

The Bowers Metrology Group specialises in delivering a full and comprehensive range of precision measuring systemss to some of the most competitive and demanding shop-floor environments.
