When Moorgate Precision Engineering was awarded a contract for the manufacture of a series of components, it turned to WNT to help.

The distinctive feature of these components is the large number of 7mm-diameter holes that required drilling.

The small plates featured 5,000 holes, while the larger plates had up to 15,000 holes.

In total, Moorgate had to produce more than 500,000 7mm-diameter holes.

The solution provided by WNT was its recently introduced Plusline range of solid-carbide drills.

The improvements were almost immediate, with each drill lasting for 6,000 holes on average, easily enough to completely drill the smaller plates.

The success of this project has since led to additional contracts being awarded on which WNT is continuing to offer help and advice in order for Moorgate to remain price competitive and have the confidence that the tooling will help them meet deliver schedules.

The most recent of these contracts is to machine some fabricated plates.

Initially this is a six month contract, with a possible extended three-year contract.

This work will tie up much of the capacity on Moorgate’s 2m-bed-length machining centre and, as such, a new 3m-bed machine will be installed shortly to create additional capacity for large, complex components.

Other tools on this project that are making a significant impact on productivity are the WNT HFD high-feed indexable insert drill and some four-flute M12 taps.

The high-feed drill is running significantly faster than any drill previously used by Moorgate.

Gains were also made in tapping these components.

The problem faced by Moorgate was the depth of thread required which, unusually, is almost four times the diameter of the tap.

Conventional three-flute taps were struggling to cope with the sticky nature of the material at this depth, so WNT proposed the use of its four-flute range.
