Zeta-Potential-Measurements-on-Colloidal-Silica - .PDF file.

Ludox TM-40 is a monodisperse aqueous colloidal silica used for particle size and zeta potential analysis. The silica particles are spherical with a modified surface, which is covered by silanol (Si-OH) groups.

Due to its stability, Ludox TM-40 is often used as a reference material to test the performance of zeta potential measurements.

In an application report from Anton Paar, an experiment is carried out to show how ELS can be used to measure the zeta potential of Ludox TM-40 with high precision and excellent reproducibility.

A series of 75 consecutive zeta potential measurements of Ludox TM-40 were carried out using the Litesizer 500, an instrument from Anton Paar for characterizing nano- and microparticles in dispersions and solutions. The Litesizer 500 determines particle size, zeta potential, and molecular mass by measuring dynamic light scattering (DLS), electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), and static light scattering (SLS). Moreover, the Litesizer 500 is the only DLS-based particle analyzer that is able to perform a straightforward measurement of the sample’s refractive index.
