Support for young welders

Walton-on-Thames based Air Products has donated £30,000 of welding equipment to Wrexham Yale College to help encourage young people to enter the welding profession.

Air Products said that the shortage of young people currently entering the welding profession is an industry-wide concern that can be eased through public-private collaboration.

The equipment donated to Wrexham Yale College includes two heavy-duty TIG welding plants, a MIG welding plant and a comprehensive maintenance package, which will be used in the college’s welding course.

Air Products also offers an apprenticeship scheme for students at the college, and the company’s engineers regularly provide the college with training, works visits and assistance with specialised expertise. This collaborative programme is intended to encourage young people to enter the welding profession.

Laurence O’Donnell, a manager at Air Products, said: ‘We have enjoyed a partnership with Yale College for a number of years now, with the shared aims of producing apprentices of the highest calibre and encouraging more young people to join the engineering profession.’
