Swiss go with Siemens

The Swiss Railway has placed a 320 million Euro order with Siemens Transportation Systems for thirty-five double-deck trains for Zurich’s commuter rail services.

The Swiss Railway (SBB) has ordered thirty-five double-deck trains from Siemens Transportation Systems for Zurich’s commuter rail services. The order is worth around EUR320 million.

The electric multiple-unit trains are scheduled to be delivered between 2005 and 2008 and will provide commuter rail services in the Greater Zurich area.

The terms of train manufacture and delivery agreed by SBB and Siemens Schweiz call for considerable local content from Switzerland.

The 4-car double-deck trains are 100 metres long, 2.78 metres wide and have a top speed of 140 kph. They offer end-to-end walk-through accessibility and, with 396 seats and standing room for 600, can accommodate around 1,000 passengers.
