Technology competition launched

A business technology competition for east midlands enterprises, ANUBIS III, has been launched this week, offering ten winning companies cash prizes of £10,000 each.

Participants will have to demonstrate how a large funding injection would support the development and marketing of their technology.

ANUBIS, now in its third year, is managed by internet solutions provider EMNET (East Midlands Network) and funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the European Regional Development Fund.

Tim Miller, managing director of EMNET, said: ‘The competition is to help SMEs become more competitive. SMEs as a group can lag behind the larger corporates when it comes to investing in ICT.

‘This competition aims to raise the standard and help SMEs access, adopt and adapt to new technology to promote innovation and enterprise. We want companies to come forward if they have a great technology idea which this competition can turn into reality,’ he added.

A past winner, Intelligent Distributed Controls (IDC), designed a unique wireless tracking system which is being trialled by Toyota.

The device, which uses Zigbee, is being used by Toyota for internal logistics process monitoring has universal applications where businesses need to track the transportation of components, raw materials, finished products, or processes in real time within their plant.

Kevin Buckley, managing director at IDC, said: ’Winning the ANUBIS money has taken us into an area which we haven’t been able to develop until now.

‘ANUBIS will certainly help us develop our unique handheld device and the software applications required to enable the tracking system to work. This project would have been significantly delayed without the ANUBIS funding which is providing a major boost to our R&D budget.’
