Parker Hannifin’s Electromechanical Division has launched two families of high-performance brushless synchronous servo motors, known as the MH and SMH series.
The MH series motors have ‘classical’ windings and are available with a wide choice of power ratings. The SMH series motors feature special ‘salient pole’ windings to maximise torque, and are suited to applications that demand faster acceleration and deceleration characteristics.
All MH and SMH series motors are three-phase designs that use neodymium iron boron magnets, and are equipped with resolvers and winding-embedded temperature sensors to provide direct feedback to the servo drive.
MH series motors cover a wide power range – there is a choice of 20 models in five frame sizes, spanning 56 to 205mm, with up to five different winding ratings. Stall torques range from 0.2Nm to 90Nm, with peak torque ratings as high as 400Nm. The motors have a conventional finned housing, offer a choice of flange type and shaft diameter, and are available in IP64 or IP65 rated versions if required. The two smallest motors in the series are 4-pole designs, while the 105mm, 145mm and 205mm frame size motors have 8 poles. These three larger models can be supplied with standard, medium or high inertia rotors and can optionally be equipped with shaft-driven or separately motorised cooling fans. The 105mm and 145mm motors are also available as ‘EEx e’ increased safety versions, for use in hazardous environments.
The SMH series motors offer a choice of 60mm, 82mm and 100mm frame sizes, with up to three different winding ratings. These ‘salient pole’ designs are capable of generating up to 30% more torque than motors using conventional technology – the smallest unit has a stall torque rating of 1.4Nm.
The motors are fitted with 8-pole rotors, and use a special thermally-conductive resin to help transfer heat away from the windings.
Different models in the series offer a choice of flange type, based on a recessed design that simplifies the installation of a gearbox, and a choice of shaft diameter, with an optional keyway.
All SMH series motors have a smooth external finish to help prevent retention of surface contamination, and are available in IP64 or IP65 rated versions which are suitable for washdown applications in the food processing industry.
