'The strain of the train'(Letters, 24 March) was interesting, with the consensus seeming to be in favour of improved public transport — rail in particular.
I was, however, surprised to find that not one respondent mentioned small motorcycles and scooters as a viable vehicle for the sub-10 mile commute.
I have 'scootered' some 12 miles (20km) during my daily trips into work in five years, enjoying laughably low running costs of 100mpg-plus economy, the ability to sail past traffic queues and true 'door-to-door' convenience. Even the UK weather can be managed with modern motorcycle clothing.
As engineers, readers of the magazine must appreciate the purity and efficiency of the powered two-wheeler.
