The Patent Office has posted the UK Trade Marks Register on the Internet. This now makes it possible for anyone with a web browser to access the Register from the comfort of their own desk without any extra charge.
The new service will be of use to anyone needing to demonstrate or verify the ownership of a trade mark on the Register. Examples could include entrepreneurs seeking finance on the strength of brand ownership, venture capitalists or other backers wanting to verify the assets of a prospect, or trading standards or other law officers seeking to verify ownership of a trade name.
The Register can be used to check the date of application for registration, the classes applied for and the goods and services specified within each class, the owner, whether the mark has been assigned, whether the mark has been examined, whether it has been advertised, whether and when registration has been granted and who to contact for correspondence.
