Ultrasonics take on turbine flow technology

Turbine flow meters are facing a new challenge from ultrasonic (transit time differential) technology. Krohne says its Altosonic V is the first ultrasonic flowmeter to gain approval for custody transfer applications (CTAs). Measurement uncertainty value is less than or equal to 0.15%.

The five-beam, multichannel ultrasonic design is insensitive to flow profile disturbances, thanks to an integral ‘confuser’, and software that measures both swirl and the Reynolds number, and compensates for these variables. The measurement system has already been granted on patent, and has another pending.
