Upgrade at Newport station

The Welsh Assembly has announced that it will jointly fund a £22m regeneration scheme to upgrade Newport railway station. A key part of the project is to build two new termini that represent Newport’s status as the ‘Gateway to Wales’.

Benefits of the scheme include improved public and passenger amenities, enhanced bus-rail connections with an upgraded bus interchange, a new pedestrian link between the north and south of the city centre and more car parking spaces.

The plan is to finalise the designs by end of 2008 with construction work beginning in early 2009. The scheme is part of a two-phase initiative to upgrade the Newport Station as part of the wider city regeneration programme.
