For the recent Women in Engineering Day, British Gas Business hosted an event featuring a number of female experts. One of the key topics discussed was engineering apprenticeships, and specifically what women can expect when they start out in the engineering industry.
For several past years (indeed whenever I become sufficiently concerned and see such re-broadcast) I have contacted both British Gas and their advertising agency: pointing out that both continue to confuse Engineers with technicians and fitters. Result? No change whatsoever. To see the same mis-use of words, and function/activities/training/ education by Claire Miles (Domestic Gas manager for British Gas) portrayed in a video of a conference apparently designed to encourage girls into Engineering…merely confirms just how far we are from any realistic change in attitude, approach, status…
Laughable.
