VolkerStevin Marine to build ammunition-loading facility

Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has awarded VolkerStevin Marine with an £18m contract to design and build a specialist marine facility in Portsmouth for loading ammunition onto Royal Navy warships.

The facility will provide docking and loading facilities for Type 45 frigates — claimed to be the most advanced class of frigate in the world and a key component of the UK’s future defence strategy.

VolkerStevin Marine is currently in the design phase of the project, which will consist of a 15 x 85m jetty, two mooring dolphins and two small vessel pontoons.

The facility, which will be built within Portsmouth’s Upper Harbour area, will also include specialist plant equipment such as cranes designed to safely handle ammunition for the frigates.
