VTT and Berkeley develop diagnostics

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University of California, Berkeley have begun a three-year project to address technology barriers in low cost diagnostics.

The aim of the project is to transfer micro-scale devices made on glass or silicon to analytical devices that can be mass-produced by roll-to-roll printing. According to the researchers, roll-to-roll printing would drastically reduce prices and increase production speed.

One of the challenges facing the researchers is creating multilayered structures with features measuring tens of micrometers.

Long-term and visiting scientists from VTT will work at the Berkeley laboratory while a VTT research team in Finland will produce and assemble components. The components will be tested in Berkeley and produced at VTT.
