Wayne Baxter, a director of the Manchester-based engineering company, Haden Freeman, has been named as the new Chair Elect of the industry safety group, The 61508 Association. He will commence the prestigious role in March 2007 and will be responsible for promoting compliance with BS EN 61508 and related standards for end users and for total supply chains.

Wayne takes over from Clive De Salis, Managing Director of Birmingham based independent engineering consultancy, Rowan House, who was Chair throughout 2005 and 2006. In his new role, Wayne will be responsible for chairing Association and management committee meetings, managing the implementation of policies as well as representing the Association in dealings with outside bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive.

The 61508 Association is a cross-industry group of companies with an interest in achieving a workable method for demonstrating compliance with BS EN 61508 and related standards. It brings together parties with an interest in functional safety and ensures understanding and competence in its use. It has a diverse range of members, spanning a range of sectors including process, energy, transport and factory automation.

Wayne Baxter, said: “I’m delighted to be appointed as the Committee Chair Elect. I’ve long had a passion for Functional Safety and have led many projects to develop workable methods for implementing the safety standard for a wide range of UK and pan-European organisations, as well as delivering lectures on its practical implementation.

“I’m looking forward to representing the Committee and building on existing awareness and developing further ways to maximise the standards’ effectiveness and use.”

Wayne has been involved in senior level engineering for the past 20 years, most recently as a board director of Manchester-based engineering company and consultancy, Haden Freeman.

He has extensive experience gained in the chemical, electrical and pharmaceutical sectors and is currently setting up a new consultancy business for Haden Freeman, covering Functional Safety for the Group, which will run alongside its Risk Services and PICME divisions, and he is also trailing Safety Data Networks for a number of high profile clients.
