Claimed as the world’s largest tunnel jacking project ever undertaken, the Boston Harbour Contract will include three road tunnels cut through very difficult ground conditions under Boston City Centre, Mass. The four Webster Schaeff Roadheader WE2000CS tunnel cutting machines selected for the task each use two FAG taper roller bearings on the cutting heads, and a FAG spherical roller bearing sited at the base of the boom arm. The project is designed to relieve City Centre traffic by linking major highways and speeding traffic flow to Logan Airport, in Boston. The tunnel sections of the project have to pass through varied and difficult ground conditions before descending in the marine clay below the harbour. Nearly 70,000 tonnes of material will be removed.
