Warwick University’s WMG has been awarded the Regius Professorship in Manufacturing, a royal honour that is bestowed by the Queen for academic research that fuels growth and productivity.
The professorship falls under the Royal Prerogative, and each appointment is approved by the Queen upon ministerial advice. In celebration of her 90th birthday, 12 Regius Professorships were awarded this year to academic institutions around the country.
”Having founded WMG in 1980 to invigorate UK manufacturing, it is a wonderful honour to be bestowed upon the Group,” said WMG chairman Professor Lord Bhattacharyya.
“This is recognition to every member of staff, over the last 35 years, who has contributed to our success. The University of Warwick was the first to have a Professor of Manufacturing, and I started with a desk, chair and a secretary. We are now internationally acclaimed and the largest centre for manufacturing in the world. I am immensely delighted to have been granted this prestigious Regius Professorship in Manufacturing for WMG.”
WMG was previously awarded a Regius Professorship in Mathematics for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2013, a position currently held by Professor Martin Hairer.
“We are delighted with the news that the Queen is to bestow a second rare and prestigious Regius Professorship to the University of Warwick,” said Professor Stuart Croft, the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
“WMG’s research and training has been transformative for a great many companies, and has vastly expanded the knowledge base of manufacturing research.”
WMG says the professorship will help bolster the university's ambitious plans for the future, including the the National Automotive Innovation Centre, which is due to open on the campus in late 2017.
