Miniature motors rarely combine high output power and reliability. But with a 1.9mm diameter, the BL 1900 brushless motor and planetary gearhead not only has staked a claim to the title of `world’s smallest commercial gearmotor’, its maker, MicroMo Electronics, claims that the system outperforms products twice its size. Producing a continuous output torque of 150 micro Nm and an intermittent output torque of up to 300 micro Nm, it uses a bipolar rare earth (Nd) permanent magnet for the rotor and a sensorless electronic commutation system. The moulded plastic gears are only 80 micro m in diameter and gearhead input speeds can be as high as 20,000rpm.
