Power and automation technology group, ABB, has secured a $28m (£20m) contract with CE Electric UK to design and build the Wakefield B 16-bay indoor gas-insulated switchgear (AIS) substation.
A subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, CE Electric UK provides power distribution services to 3.7m premises in England through a network of 31,000 substations.
The latest deal is part of ABB’s long-term framework agreement with CE Electric UK for the design, construction, supply and installation of substations throughout the north of England.
The substation is expected to improve the electricity supply to West Yorkshire and will replace an existing outdoor AIS substation. According to ABB, its compact GIS switchgear will allow the new substation to fit into a building and occupy one fourth of the land needed by the existing station.
ABB’s scope of supply will include 132kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables to transfer power to the substation, 16 bays of ABB’s ELK 132kV GIS equipment, protection equipment and low-voltage AC/DC supplies. ABB will also adapt the terminal towers for the overhead lines and sealing end platforms.
Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, said: ‘In addition to improving power reliability and security, this GIS substation will lower environmental impact by improving efficiency and considerably reducing the installation’s footprint.’
