BAE Systems, the Engineering Council and six engineering institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to progress engineering training, development and professional registration programmes at BAE Systems in the UK.
The six professional engineering institutions signing the MoU are the Institution of Mechanical Engineers; the Institution of Engineering and Technology; the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology; the Institute of Physics; the Royal Institution of Naval Architects; and the Royal Aeronautical Society.
According to BAE Systems, this is the first partnership to bring together so many engineering organisations committed to building the reputation of engineering and ensuring it is recognised for the role it plays in sustaining the UK’s economy.
The MoU outlines activities for all parties, including establishing a steering group for professional registration to oversee activities.
Each professional engineering institution will also seek to formally accredit BAE Systems graduate and apprentice training programmes, as well as visiting BAE Systems sites to provide advice and guidance before engineers apply for professional registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).
As part of their professional development, BAE Systems will actively encourage its engineers and scientists to host and support regional engineering events jointly with the professional engineering institutions.
BAE Systems also intends to establish a directory that will be available to all UK engineers in the company who are seeking mentoring and guidance from an appropriately qualified professional.

The MoU forms part of BAE Systems’ Skills 2020 programme, launched in July 2010 to ensure it has the right skills to remain competitive and operate successfully in the UK over the next decade.
