Boils down to China

Alstom has acquired 51 per cent of China-based Wuhan Boiler Company’s (WBC) capital for €32.8m after receiving final approval from the Chinese authorities.

WBC, a supplier of coal-fired power plants, has been an industrial partner of Alstom for more than 10 years, and generates an annual turnover of €200m. The agreement will provide Alstom with a strategic industrial base for export, with 35 per cent of boilers produced by WBC planned for export in the future.

In return, Alstom will supply WBC with advanced technology including supercritical pulverised coal technology, circulating fluidised boilers and low nitrogen oxide burners.

A new 140,000 square metre factory will be built on the outskirts of Wuhan and production will be transferred to that location. The factory will have the capacity to produce 600MW supercritical and 1000MW ultra-supercritical boilers as well as large circulating fluidised bed boilers.

Alstom already produces 600MW steam turbines and generators at one of its Chinese plants near Beijing, and hydroturbines and generators in Tianjin.
