Bucking the trend

Jab Design is creating a low-volume, high-value manufacturing and assembly unit in the centre of Liverpool.

Jab Design has created a sister company to support low-volume, high-value manufacturing and assembly in the centre of Liverpool. The company, Clever Machines, was launched last week.

Clever Machines’ first client, Genial Genetic Solutions, cut the ribbon to declare the facility officially open. Also in attendance were representatives from Bionow, Medilink Northwest, Business Link Northwest, Liverpool Ventures, University of Liverpool and Liverpool Business Association, as well as several existing and prospective clients.

'Clever Machines has come about as a response to a growing demand in the market. The availability of this kind of small scale, specialist service has grown increasingly scarce as larger scale manufacturing has moved East, but it’s much more logical that this service is closely connected to the design process. It will add tremendous value to our design development process, ensuring that what we design ‘does exactly what it says on the tin,'  said Jonathan Butters, MD of Jab Design.

Jab Design has been working closely with Cheshire-based Genial Genetic Solutions, a developer of cell harvesting machines, for the last two years, designing and prototyping automated laboratory equipment.

Clever Machines’ first contract is to assemble automated suspension culture harvesting machines; these automate the lengthy and complex processing of blood samples to extract chromosomes which are then analysed to detect early stages of cancer and other abnormalities within the cells.

Clever Machines is expected to generate six new posts over the next two years and increase Jab Design’s current turnover by 50% over the coming year.
