Carillion, the Wolverhampton-based support services and construction company, has secured a £90m contract from Network Rail to improve rail connections from South Acton and Stratford/Barking.
The contract, known as the North London Railway Infrastructure Project, includes connections with the new East London Railway and will be the largest project to be commissioned by Network Rail on the North London line ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Carillion will be responsible for the design and construction of the civil engineering, track, overhead line and power supply as part of a £1.4bn upgrade of the London Overground railway jointly funded by Network Rail, Transport for London (TfL) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). The company has appointed Hyder to provide design and technical expertise during the construction phase initially.
John McDonough, Carillion’s chief executive, said: ‘This project is a key part of the programme to upgrade the London rail network and we are delighted to be working with Network Rail to deliver this project ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
‘This further enhances Carillion’s position as a UK leader in delivering transport infrastructure projects, a market in which we have a good pipeline of opportunities in 2009.’
The deal comes on the back of recent contract wins for Carillion in the rail sector, including an £80m contract for maintenance of the East London Line and its involvement in a five-year project to deliver £800m of investment in track enhancements.
