University of Hertfordshire researchers have taken robots out of the lab and put them into a house so that they can be developed into personal companions.

 

 

The university team, led by Prof Kerstin Dautenhahn, is taking part in the European Living with Robots and Interactive Companions (LIREC) project, which aims to develop companion robots that can serve as useful assistants in a domestic environment.

 

Launched yesterday in Hatfield, Herts, robots with humanoid features were used to demonstrate how people interact differently with robots of different appearances.

 

The launch also highlighted research into how ‘toy-like’ robots can be used to improve remote human-human communication via the internet.
