Britain is abuzz with civil engineering right now. The government and industry have been on a bit of spending spree to try to make the country’s infrastructure fit for the 21st century. And while many of the biggest projects of the last few years have been focused primarily on London (Crossrail, the Olympics), now the rest of the UK is getting in on the action.

“Civil engineering forms the backbone of our communities,” said ICE director general Nick Baveystock. “It protects us from flooding, ensures we have clean drinking water, finds clever ways to recycle and reuse our rubbish and provides us with the roads, railways, ports and airports that keep us on the move and connect us with others. It quite literally shapes the world in which we live.”
