400-kilovolt (kV) substation.

Soaring demand for electricity and volatile peak load swings in the UAE have led to an interconnection project to link five isolated utilities into a national power grid, called the Emirates National Grid (ENG).

This 400-kV substation – the first of its size awarded to ABB in the UAE - will connect the Fujairah Water and Power Plant to the ENG.

ABB’s scope of supply includes two 500-megavolt ampere (MVA) transformers; two 20-megavolt ampere reactive (MVAR) reactors, and two 50-MVAr reactors; 20 400-kilovolt (KV) GIS (gas insulated switchgear) bays; and 21 132 KV GIS bays.

ABB will also supply substation control and monitoring systems, protection, telecommunications, LDC integration and complete civil works.

ABB factories in Switzerland, Sweden and Germany will manufacture the equipment. The ENG is expected to be finished by the end of 2006.
