, the global power and automation technology group, has secured orders worth $75m (£43m) to provide propulsion, power-generation and power-distribution systems to a number of new ships in
.
The vessels are designed to process and transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) extracted from subsea and onshore reserves. ABB’s delivery is expected to improve fuel efficiency and provide a reliable power supply for onboard equipment.
Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division said: ‘Demand for energy continues to drive growth in the marine construction sector for LNG processing and transportation. ABB’s ability to deliver reliable and energy-efficient equipment for LNG ships helps operators to meet the needs of their own end customers.’
The order includes the supply of electric propulsion units, onboard power systems, generators and frequency converters for floating natural gas liquefaction vessels, to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries, and new transport vessels for Brunei Gas Carriers that will be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
Commissioning and delivery of the vessels are scheduled between 2010 and 2012.
