Alcatel-Lucent to expand XL’s network

Alcatel-Lucent has been awarded a multi-million Euro GSM/GPRS network expansion contract from PT Excelcomindo Pratama (XL), one of Indonesia’s leading mobile service providers.

The new contract will primarily cover the provincial capital and major cities on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and enable XL to provide mobile service to a greater number of the island’s 45 million inhabitants.

Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide XL with hundreds of new base stations, its Evolium Base Station Subsystem hardware and software, as well as a suite of network integration services, including network optimisation, system support and general project management.

According to Alcatel-Lucent, the project is a key step forward for XL in realising its strategy of expanding its network outside of Java to tap into new subscriber markets and maintain its competitive position.
