A consortium led by Alstom has secured a €40m contract to supply eight emergency diesel generators to the Taishan nuclear power plant in Guangdong, China.

A consortium led by Alstom has secured a €40m (£35m) contract to supply eight emergency diesel generators (EDGs) to the Taishan nuclear power plant in Guangdong, China.

The contract will see Alstom supply the design, manufacturing and procurement for eight 9.1MW EDGs that are due to be commissioned in 2013, as well as the provision of an on-site support service.

Alstom previously supplied two 1,750MW Arabelle turbine-generator packages for the Taishan plant. In July last year, it also secured a €200m contract with the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) for the engineering and procurement of the complete turbine island.

Guy Chardon, senior vice-president at Alstom Power Thermal Products, said: ‘This contract marks a new step in Alstom’s commitment to the Taishan project and the development of China’s nuclear power generation.’

China hopes to increase its total installed nuclear power generating capacity from 1.2 per cent to five per cent by 2020 and the Taishan plant is expected to play a significant role in its plans.
