Alstom supplies Mannheim 9 project

Alstom has signed two contracts, worth approximately €450m (£403m), to supply Grosskraftwerk Mannheim with boiler and turbine units at the Mannheim power plant in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The unit - Mannheim 9 - will have an electrical output of over 900MW and supply 25 per cent of the Rhein-Neckar region’s electricity, the equivalent of approximately 600,000 households.

It will replace the existing units 3 and 4 (with an output of only 220MW each), which will be taken out of service after the commissioning of the new unit in 2013.

Grosskraftwerk Mannheim is a coal-fired cogeneration plant with an installed base of 1,675MW, which produces up to 1000MW of heat as well as electricity and has been supplying heat and power to the region for over 85 years.

District heating applications such as these help save 200,000 TCE (ton of coal equivalent) primary energy and 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The new unit is expected to increase this figure.
