AMEC expands potash mine

AMEC has been awarded a £36m contract to design and manage the expansion of a Canadian potash mine operated by PotashCorp, the world’s largest fertiliser company.

PotashCorp will invest £430m into upgrading its Cory Potash Mine in Saskatchewan, Canada, as it expects that the demand for the mineral, essential to the production of fertiliser, will increase by more than 12 per cent this year.

‘A growing demand for high quality food and biofuels are contributing to the heightened demand for potash,’ said Bill Doyle, president and CEO of PotashCorp.

AMEC will provide the engineering, procurement, construction management and project management services (EPCM) for the project. The expansion aims to increase production capacity from 1.2 million tonnes to two million tonnes by extending the mine’s warehousing and loading facilities, and building a new factory to produce red potash.

The project is expected to take three years and be completed by 2010.
