Amec Nuclear and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korean Power Engineering Company.

Amec Nuclear

and the

United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority

(UKAEA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the

Korean Power Engineering Company

(KOPEC). Amec and UKAEA aim to win work in the multi-billion pound South Korean nuclear market.

The companies will target work in nuclear waste management and repository projects, decommissioning, reactor services and nuclear plants in Korean and international markets. Amec and UKAEA will also support an education exchange programme to allow KOPEC to send key staff to the UK to gain experience on decommissioning projects including working at UKAEA’s Dounreay facility in Scotland.

“This is a very important strategic contract,” said Alan Lamerton, Managing Director of Amec Nuclear Holdings. “Amec is an established company in Korea. This and our strong links with UKAEA have given us an undoubted advantage and means that we have made progress in targeting the nuclear market in Korea where others have failed.”

Lim Sung-choon, president of KOPEC said he expected the agreement to allow the company to join overseas projects. “The biggest agenda for our domestic atomic energy industry is to develop overseas markets and advance high technology.”
