ATK awarded $22m ammo contract

Alliant Techsystems has received a $22m contract to produce 25mm Bushmaster M793 Target Practice-Traced, 25mm M910 Target Practice Discarding Sabot-Traced and 30mm M788 Target Practice ammunition.

The contract was awarded by the US Army Sustainment Command, Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois.

This is the first year of a five-year, multiple year contract. If all options of the contract are exercised, the total value could be worth more than $100m. Work on the contract will be performed at ATK's facilities in Arizona, Virginia and West Virginia.

The practice rounds are said to provide the same ballistic performance as tactical ammunition, but at a much lower cost. The M793 and M910 are used for training on the Light Armored Vehicle and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and other 25mm applications. The 30mm M788 is used with the Apache attack helicopter's cannon and the M230 Chain Gun.
