BAE Systems has announced the acquisition of Advanced Ceramics Research, an Arizona-based producer of advanced ceramic materials and small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
The deal is part of BAE’s strategy to expand its UAS capability. The acquired company will be integrated into BAE Systems US operations, headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, following regulatory approval.
Advanced Ceramics Research currently employs 60 staff and produces three gas/electric UAS platforms for US government agencies and armed forces. These models have flight durations ranging from one to 10 hours and with the most powerful able to carry a 15-18lb payload.
In addition to UAS, the company has an Integrated Ground Control Station (iGCS) platform that supports supporting multiple UAS operations, plus capabilities in ceramic materials for military and commercial aerospace applications.
Walt Havenstein, president and chief executive of BAE Systems, said: ‘This acquisition will provide BAE Systems with an excellent set of mature, operational products within the Small/Mini and Tactical UAS market. The addition of these smaller UAS platforms will complement the larger UAS, being developed by BAE Systems in the UK.’
