The Ministry of Defence has awarded BAE Systems a contract worth more than £30m to supply one new and one upgraded Commander Air Defence Radar system to the Royal Air Force.

BAE Systems is to supply the medium-to-long range, solid state, rapidly deployable, air defence radars and provide logistics support throughout their service life, expected to be at least until 2025.

Designed and built to operate across a range of extreme environmental conditions, the Commander radar family provides radar picture coverage for integrated command and control of air defence forces. This includes the RAF’s quick response Tornado air defence fighters which are being scrambled every month to deal with terror alerts.

Commander is designed for rapid deployment to either prepared or unprepared locations but is also suitable for static operations and can be used as both a ‘backbone’ sensor or a deployable gap-filling radar.
