Alstom has been awarded a contract worth around €500m (£460m) by RWE Power to supply two boilers for its Eemshaven power plant in the Netherlands.
The hard coal-fired units will provide electricity for more than three million homes and cut CO2 emissions by about 2.5 million tons per year compared with older systems.
When completed in 2013, the 800MW boilers will operate at ultra-supercritical steam conditions, which means that they will be among the most efficient of their kind worldwide.
Reaching an efficiency of approximately 47 per cent, the units will burn 20 per cent less coal than previous generations to create the same power while greatly reducing plant emissions, including CO2.
Finally, the units are designed to co-fire up to 10 per cent biomass - an important renewable energy option. The units can be retrofitted at a later date with equipment used to capture CO2 after combustion.
Alstom's equipment generates about 60 per cent of the country’s electricity.
In 2008, it was awarded two combined cycle power plant contracts, Electrabel’s Flevocentrale (870MW) and Essent’s Claus C (1280MW), which are currently under construction.
