BAE Systems has secured a contract modification worth $19m to upgrade 1,800 Caiman Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles for the US Marine Corps.

has secured a contract modification worth $19m (£11.5m) to upgrade 1,800 Caiman Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles for the US Marine Corps.

To date, BAE has manufactured 2,868 Caiman MRAPs in Texas during the vehicle's 22-month production run.

The latest upgrades are intended to improve the reliability and functionality of the Caiman's systems. Work is scheduled to be completed by July 2010.

Chris Chambers, vice-president and general manager of Global Tactical Systems, said: ‘These engineering upgrades to the Caiman MRAP provide our forces with the latest vehicle enhancements. These enhancements improve our military's ability to safely and effectively accomplish their mission.’
