Cash for content

Qualcomm has acquired Elata, the UK-based mobile content delivery software developer for $57 million in cash.
But the acquisition is hardly a surprise. Elata’s ‘senses’ software product, enabling mobile operators to manage the real-time data associated with downloadable mobile content, had previously been integrated with Qualcomm’s very own BREW solution. The companies had been jointly promoting the solution to customers and it is already powering seventy networks.
The unified delivery system itself is platform-agnostic, and allows operators to consolidate all of their content services. Using it, they can manage content including ringtones, wallpapers, and BREW, Java, streaming and OMA-compliant content for a range of feature phones and smart phones on WCDMA (UMTS), GSM and CDMA2000 networks.
The acquisition is the second in so many weeks for the San Diego, CA-based company. Last week, it acquired the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex Access (OFDMA) technology vendor Flarion Technologies for the somewhat larger sum of $600 million.
