Presented to parliament today (June 25 2025), the CCC’s progress update highlighted the significant steps already made by the UK, which has now halved emissions from 1990 levels. Growth in EVs (19.6 per cent of new sales in 2024) and heat pumps (up 56 per cent) helped 2024 emissions fall by 2.5 per cent, with woodland creation up almost 60 per cent.

Despite these trends, both EV and heat pump rollout remain behind targets. The CCC pointed to consumer electricity prices as a key factor in the continued decarbonisation of heat and transport, as well as an important indicator of the benefits of climate action.

“The UK can be proud of our progress in reducing emissions,” said interim CCC chair, Professor Piers Forster. We’ve cut them by over 50 per cent since 1990. Our country is among a leading group of economies demonstrating a commitment to decarbonise society. This is to be celebrated: delivering deep emissions reduction is the only way to slow global warming.
