Veolia Environmental Services Shropshire will operate the facility, which burns waste at high temperatures, using the resulting energy to generate electricity.
This permit (issued under the Environmental Permitting [England & Wales] Regulations 2010) requires the company to comply with all relevant legislation including strict air emission and monitoring standards.
Planning permission is required before the facility can be built at the Battlefield site. A planning application has been made to Shropshire Council but its outcome has yet to be determined.
Environment Agency area manager Dafydd Evans said: ’Issuing the permit is only the first stage in our regulation of the facility. Should it gain planning permission and be built, we will monitor its environmental performance, including emissions to air, to ensure that permit conditions are not breached.’
Veolia Environmental Services has been present in the UK since 1990. With 2008 revenues of more than £1.3bn, the company operates a network of landfill sites, materials recovery facilities, transfer stations, civic amenity sites, energy recovery facilities and compost sites.
