Holtec Britain unveils plans to build UK SMR factory at Doncaster’s GatewayEast
Holtec Britain, a leader in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), and a finalist in Great British Nuclear’s SMR competition, has selected GatewayEast, next to Doncaster-Sheffield Airport, as the preferred location for its planned new UK factory.

According to the company - which is a subsidiary of US nuclear components firm Holtec International, the planned factory, will produce two SMR units annually and place the UK at the forefront of new global export market for SMR components.
According to analysis from former government Green-Book economists at Bradshaw Advisory the factory will generate £1.8bn GVA (£1.5bn from the proposed factory and £300m from professional engineering and technical services relating to SMR deployment), and create 3,600 construction, 16,000+ supply chain, and 3,000 unionised engineering jobs over 20 years.
Holtec’s SMR is a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) - the most common type in the world and the same type under construction at Hinkley Point C, helping to standardise supply chains and develop a skilled UK workforce. The company plans to deploy the USA’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR-300) by 2030 in Michigan - which will create training opportunities and derisk Holtec’s plans for the UK.
